New York’s capitol, in Albany, was the seventeenth capitol I photographed. This building is a lot of fun to photograph, and I want to revisit it at some point. That’s a combination of two factors: the complex mix of architectural styles in its interior, and the fascinating modernist Empire State Plaza that it is now part of. The interior is unlike that of any other capitol, a result of the project switching between lead architects (including the grat H.H. Richardson). With both Romanesque and Renaissance influences, there are tons of great areas for photos, and some beautiful interplays of light and shadow. Outside, though, is all about the geometric modernism and brutalism of the plaza, whose artistic merits are debatable but whose photographic options are rich. These photos were taken over two trips, in April of 2013 and August of 2014.
