New Mexico’s capitol, in Santa Fe, was the first capitol I photographed. This project began unknowingly, on a trip my wife and I took to the west (New Mexico, Colorado, and Wyoming) that took place right after I bought my first DSLR camera. On a whim, we decided to visit the capitol, which is maybe the most distinctive and different capitol of all, a low-slung circular building whose shape is styled after the Zia sun symbol that graces New Mexico’s state flag. As I wasn’t aware that I was starting a project that will likely take me the better part of two decades, I didn’t do much in New Mexico; the only capitol I have fewer photos from is Wyoming. This set also includes a photo of the New Mexico territorial capitol from Spanish rule. These photos were all taken in August of 2012.
