Tennessee’s capitol, in Nashville, was the fifteenth capitol I photographed. The Tennessee building is unorthodox - relatively small, with a cupola and no dome, one of just ten without one. It’s set at Nashville’s highest point, and the grounds include the tomb of President James K. Polk - it is one of just two state capitols I’m aware of that have people prominently buried on their grounds. It also features multiple sites of memory for Andrew Jackson, including a large equestrian statue. The capitol has struggled with other representations, most notably the eventual removal of a bust of Confederate General and KKK figure Nathan Bedford Forrest, which was still on display when I visited. These photos were all taken in February of 2013.
