South Dakota’s capitol, in Pierre, was the thirty fifth capitol I photographed. And what a difference from its northern brother: the South Dakota capitol is a beauty, set on a hill in tiny Pierre, one of the smallest capital cities by population of any state. The building is flanked by a man-made lake which offers outstanding reflection shots, and features a warm interior with a remarkable commitment to corn-based iconography, no surprise in a state that also features a Corn Palace. These photos were all taken in July of 2022.
