Puerto Rico’s capitol is in San Juan. If it were a state capitol, it would have been the twenty first I photographed. As it is, it is the first territorial capitol I have photographed. It is among the country’s newer capitols, completed in 1929. If PR were to achieve statehood it would be the only capitol with a beachfront. The interior is simple but beautiful, with murals depicting the island’s history, though modern artists would likely make some very different (and better) choices there. The exterior is entirely white marble, striking in the direct sunlight and verdant green of Puerto Rico. The state constitution is permanently displayed in a circular table at the center of the rotunda. These photos were all taken in February of 2014.
